Where to Stay in Seoul: MYEONGDONG

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about where to stay in Seoul. The thing is, there are many districts and neighborhoods in Seoul and each has its own charm. There is no single best place to stay at because there are many good options out there and the answer to the question really depends upon where you will stay, what you will do in Seoul, and how much is your budget.

I am going to do a series on this topic but I will only cover, in the meantime, the areas of Myeongdong, Samcheongdong, Hongdae, and Gangnam in Seoul, and Nampo and Seomyeon in Busan. And my series will start with Myeongdong.

In making suggestions and recommendations, I am considering my experience, i.e., whether I stayed in, visited, or have seen the place personally. Whether it is a guesthouse, a low to mid-range hotel or a luxury one, my top criteria is location in relation to distance to the shopping streets of Myeongdong and more particularly, Myeongdong Station. I am not considering their proximity to other places of interest in Jung-gu or Central Seoul. The shopping streets and Myeongdong subway station are my points of reference because those who frequently ask me about where to stay in Seoul are first time visitors and I am suggesting these places for their convenience.

I have stayed at Myeongdong MOM House twice already and have written a short review here. What I really liked about Myeongdong MOM House is that it’s very close to the Myeongdong subway station, a block away from Two Two chicken and Daiso Myeongdong, and is just across the busy shopping streets of Myeongdong.

There are two Philstay locations in Myeongdong: Central and Myeongdong Station. The one I would suggest is Philstay Myeongdong Station because, as the name implies, it is closer to the subway station and is right smack in the heart of the shopping streets of Myeongdong.

There are many K-Guesthouses in Myeongdong and the one I would suggest is K-Guesthouse Myeongdong 3. It may not be the closest to the subway station from among the four K-Guesthouses but its location is still great. It’s not too far from the subway, it is right in the heart of the shopping streets of Myeongdong, and I love the common area of K-Guesthouse Myeongdong 3.

Step Inn Myeongdong is right inside the shopping streets of Myeongdong and is between two subway stations. You can access it through Myeongdong Station or Euljiro-1 ga Station. It has good reviews in Booking.com and Tripadvisor. It’s clean and their staff are accommodating.

$ to $$ HOTELS

#1 Nine Tree Hotel Myeongdong

There’s Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong 2 and then there’s Nine Tree Hotel Myeongdong. My recommended low to mid-range hotel is the latter. It’s a few steps away from Exit 7 of Myeongdong Station, and the stop for Bus 6015 which connects Myeongdong and Incheon Airport is just right outside the hotel. Nine Tree Hotel Myeongdong also has family rooms which are perfect if you travel with kids.

#2 Hotel Prince Seoul

Hotel Prince Seoul is across Nine Tree Hotel Myeongdong and is a few steps away from Myeongdong MOM House. If you take tours to, for example, Nami Island or Everland, the usual pick up point is outside Hotel Prince Seoul. The hotel is right outside Exit 2 of Myeongdong Station, a few steps away from Daiso Myeongdong and CCA Hair Salon Myeongdong.

#3 Savoy Hotel Myeongdong

One thing I can assure you is that if there’s one thing you’ll thank me for recommending these hotels in Myeongdong, it’s gotta be their location. Savoy Hotel Myeongdong is literally in the heart of the shopping streets. It’s so near that iconic green wall of Nature Republic and is across Line Friends Myeongdong.

#4 Hotel Skypark III

There are many Skypark hotels in Myeongdong but the one I am recommending is Hotel Skypark III. This is at the other side of the street in front of Daiso Myeongdong, right outside Exit 9 of Myeongdong subway station, and is a few steps away from Nine Tree Hotel Myeongdong and the stop for Bus 6015 that connects Myeongdong and Incheon Airport. Again, I am recommending this because of its superb location.

I have not stayed in any of these expensive hotels yet but their reviews make staying in any of them worth it. However, I have seen them and/or walked past them in my previous visits so at the very least, I can assure you of their location.

janiscooking l7 myeongdong.jpg

The location of L7 Myeongdong is right outside Exit 9 of Myeongdong Station, very close to Hotel Skypark III. L7 Myeongdong is filled with trendy vibes and offers state-of-the-art facilities with breathtaking view of Seoul. After a tiring day of shopping and exploration, you can have a relaxing foot spa or head to the rooftop bar for some of their signature cocktails.

janiscooking hotel28 myeongdong.jpg

While still in the heart of Myeongdong, the closest subway station to Hotel28 Myeongdong is not Myeongdong station but Euljiro-1 ga station. I am into industrial design and Hotel28 Myeongdong is a place I will stay at in the future if only for its warm industrial room interiors.  I really like this hotel’s design.

janiscooking aloft seoul myeongdong.jpg

A lot of people have been raving about Aloft Seoul Myeongdong not only because of its location but because of the rooms, amenities, and food. Location-wise, it is not near any subway station. But it is still in the heart of the shopping streets, is just across Shinsegae, and is close to Namdaemun Market. I would love to stay there for the food, of course!

When you talk of luxury hotels close to Myeongdong, two names pop up and they are Lotte Hotel Seoul and The Westin Chosun Hotel Seoul. They’re not a walking distance away from the Myeongdong shopping streets but it’s easy to reach them even by public transport. Both of them are close to the City Hall and Seoul Station.

And there you have it, my top picks for Myeongdong guesthouses and hotels. Stay tuned for my next post! Annyeong!
